Highlights in Biotechnology

Biotech CEOs Poised to Partner with China to Grow the Industry

This week, BIO is leading a delegation of biopharma CEOs to China for meetings with members of the Chinese biotech community and government leaders. During their visit, Chinese patent examiners, U.S. patent examiners, and biotech patent experts are conducting a workshop to discuss several issues of importance to biotechnology patenting practices in China. These meetings will help lay a foundation for increased cooperation to help the biotech industry to flourish in China.

Since the first biotech crop was commercialized in 1996, many wonder why farmers are so enthusiastically adopting biotechnology (it’s more sustainable, more environmentally friendly and less costly), whether or not biotech crops are as safe as conventional crops (they are), and why foods derived from biotech crops don’t require special labels. As the use of agricultural biotechnology increases globally, people need information about food production that is truthful, so they can form opinions based on facts, not fear.

Livestock Cloning: 5 Nations Sign Statement of Support

Five nations have come out in support of livestock cloning as one of many agricultural technologies that can help meet our growing demand for sustainable food production. Following intergovernmental meetings in Buenos Aires, representatives from the governments of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, New Zealand and the United States signed a document in support of livestock cloning technology, and invited other governments to sign on as well.

Biotech Innovations and the World's Poorest: NIH Director to Deliver Keynote Address

The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) and BIO Ventures for Global Health (BVGH) announced today that Francis Collins, MD, PhD, Director of the National Institutes of Health, will provide the keynote address at the Partnering for Global Health Forum 2011. The conference will be co-located with the BIO International Convention and will be held June 27, 2011 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.
